RESIDENCIES

NITESTREET

A twice-yearly performance event for young Indigenous performers and their peers, in a supportive environment. Corrugated Iron can support local young people and students in developing work either within a school setting, or through one of the outreach projects and through other partnerships linked in with Corrugated. Nitestreet is now seen as part of the local fabric for Indigenous Youth Arts with both individuals and organizations. It continues to provide a single venue and evening twice a year where young Indigenous people interested in the arts can view each others work and recent projects.

Besides offering a platform for young people to engage and perform within, other tangible outcomes from Nitestreet over the last year have included: Bands showcasing work and being offered gigs as a result, performers in Nitestreet became linked in with other Corrugated Iron projects (for example, 2009’s multi genre show ‘Your Music Sux…. but you’re ok’) and participants running lights and sound. As a result of feedback, more opportunities in this area of production will be pursued in future Nitestreet programs. Nitestreet is also staged as a conduit between a live performance opportunity and the current Indigenous Residency programs that Corrugated Iron is plugged into. Besides the performance items, other works are shown including the stop motion animation footage developed through workshops delivered with one community, and other multi media skills based projects.

The Nitestreet platform is also great opportunity for other connected service providers, independent groups, schools and teachers to encourage young people to participation in consultation with Corrugated Iron and the links to its residency programs.
